Shannon Steiner of the Department of History of Art has successfully defended her dissertation “Byzantine Enamel and the Aesthetics of Technological Power, Ninth to Twelfth Centuries.” Shannon’s dissertation investigates Byzantine enameling practice as an alchemical technology that reflected the Byzantine Empire's knowledge and command of the natural world. Her dissertation was directed by Associate Professor of History of Art Alicia Walker.

Shannon is currently a Hanns Swarzenski and Brigitte Horney Swarzenski Fellow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
